Listened to The First Woman this morning. The main thing I had remembered from my first read was the boarding school descriptions. I had forgotten there was a whole part about the grandmothers’ lives in the 1930s and 1940s (I had to go back to add the 19, because I realised that we are almost in the 2030s and it might be confusing. How are we almost 30 years into the 21st century already?). And then I just got to the next part and was thrown into something else that I had forgotten.
Some people read a book and the whole of it, maybe not every sentence and phrase, but the overall plot and the way it is written, sits with them and stays with them. For me, it is more a feeling of the characters that stay with me, much more than the events or plot. And then there will be little scenes snd moments that will sit with me years later. And the more times I read a book, the more little scenes and moments will stick with me. And then some of those are enhanced or added to if a book has been made into a film or TV show, or play. And so I have this little collection of mini scenes from books I have read over the years rolling around in my head. I very rarely write reviews of books these days, and more just a summary of how the book made me feel. I would have to write a lot of notes while reading to write a ‘proper’ review. But maybe how it made me feel and the scenes and moments that stood out is what I should be passing on.
