Welcome to Morning Ink, where I share my daily fountain pen drawing and whatever thoughts (sometimes none, mostly reasonably short, occasionally long and very rambling) jump out and onto the screen. If you don’t want daily emails you can toggle them off by going to Manage subscription – just turn Morning Ink off, no need to fully unsubscribe!1
I am sat in a hotel room, having drunk two teeny tiny cups of black tea (espresso size cups) amd wondering if now might be the time to work out how to use a Nespresso machine, as there always seems to be one everywhere I stay in Europe, and I have never successfully used one.
I have realised that I can lean into birds again for this week’s coastal theme and I can even potentially use one of the sketches from the first bird-themed week.
I am also wondering whether to put Instagram back on my phone and to start sharing Morning Ink on my sketchbook insta that hasn’t been updated in yonks.
And I am looking forward to today’s travelling, which will involve two changes and an extra mini country, though with no time to explore that country (Luxembourg).
Yesterday was quite long, though with no problems. I did a variety of things on the train, including not noticing (but not actually falling asleep) that we had gone under the channel. I read. I drew (colouring one of my letter bird pieces, because my brain wasn’t ready to ideate this week’s piece). I listened to old podcasts – from last year and I think ones I had downloaded for our trip up to Scotland at Christmas. I did also fit in some dozing.
The journey from London to Brussels is really quick – almost as quick as Stroud to London, and in fact quicker than Stroud to St Pancras. I was not expecting to get food on the trip, but my first class interrail pass did net me a nice salad.
Once I had decompressed here a bit, I had a little wander and grabbed some food from a Carrefour, before returning to the hotel to watch more This Is Us (thank you, smart TVs and the ability to log into our streaming accounts).
Thanks so much for being here. Your presence on its own is a joy, but I love to hear from you, too, so please do feel free to leave a comment. About something that has resonated for you in today’s picture or in today’s words. Or about something completely unrelated. Tell me about your morning, your creative practice, your particular work or life juggling act. Anything. If you want to go even further you can take out a paid subscription – if you’re happy to give me your postal address I'll send you some art of some kind in the post.
And if you don’t like subscriptions (I totally get it!) you can ‘tip me’ instead. But really, your presence and comments are the best rewards – if they could be exchanged for food and electricity, I’d be so very happy.

Amazing how quickly we can get from one country to the next, and train travel is always the best way of doing it. Learn to use the coffee maker, its easy!
