Hard to not worry about leaving people off! You could choose the specific niche or two that you're most interested in - that way the motivation stays strong - and let people share suggestions but only share those you genuinely think are great or that tick certain boxes? Do what is most pleasing to you rather than try to please everyone. (That's my selfish motto for anything internet-related). 😋
Oh yes, that is definitely a worry, and something that would cause me anxiety. I am continually discovering new publications on here, and there is far more than I am aware of myself. But if I only share what I personally like, then that’s going to be entirely subjective and there will be people who’s art doesn’t personally call to me, but would to someone else, so I think, if it is going to be a useful stack, it definitely needs more than just me curating it.
Oh yes, definitely. I was thinking of it more as being something that was just yours and therefore much less pressure, but then also probably not as much help to others. What would be your main aim in creating it?
I'm not up to speed on Substack! I tend to only use it as a newsletter-sending-service, so I don't really know it's potential in other areas.
Oh yes, that would be far easier! I think it's definitely morphing into something bigger, that acts not just as a list, but also a sharing platform for other arty substackers, with guest posts and round-ups. But a plain list sitting somewhere on my own substack would be much simpler.
Some examples (I am sure there are others in other topics/fields):
I posted a Note a while ago asking someone to start ArtStack so I didn't have to! Glad you are thinking about it. Personally, I'm a visual artist and would like a 'stack that rounds up all the other visual artists and art critics on Substack. I hear your conundrum about who to include - tricky. The list could get really long. I know there's already a collective stack for textile artists, not sure about illustrators. Maybe start by looking at what is already in existence and fill the gap? I'd be interested in helping out if you decided to include fine artists.
Thank you. I would also love one that encompasses the whole gamut and it would be useful to have different people look after different parts, if so, but it could definitely get quite unwieldy! Maybe we need individual stacks and then an art stack of arty stacks! I will let you know when I arrange the first call to talk about it, in case you would like to join in.
I’m def in to help, I’ve got some time on my hands in the next few months, a brain full of ideas, and would love the experience! Let’s chat ✨🩷🙌🏻
Wonderful. Thank you! Will be in touch.

Ah! That does make sense, and does seem like a BIG ongoing task.

I’d totally be willing to help because I feel responsible now 😅
You definitely are a little bit responsible 😁
Then I’m definitely in 😂
